The Complete Guide to Marketing & Analytics Tracking
What Is “Tracking & Connections”?
Tracking infrastructure is the set of analytics, tag-management, advertising-pixel, and session-recording tools a website installs to measure how visitors find it, what they do, and whether marketing campaigns work. Without this measurement layer, every SEO and marketing decision is made blind — you cannot tell which pages convert, which channels drive revenue, or whether a change helped or hurt. This checker scans a site’s homepage HTML and reports which tools are present across five weighted categories.
The Five Categories We Check
- Web Analytics (30%) — Google Analytics 4. The single most important tool: it measures traffic, sources, engagement, and conversions. A site without analytics is flying blind.
- Search Engine Verification (25%) — Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools verification meta tags. These unlock organic search data, indexing status, and manual-action notices straight from the search engines.
- Tag Manager (20%) — Google Tag Manager. Centralizes all tracking scripts so marketers can deploy and update tags without a developer or a code release.
- Conversion Tracking (15%) — Meta Pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag, and X (Twitter) Pixel. Required to measure return on ad spend and to retarget visitors who didn’t convert.
- Session Recording (10%) — Microsoft Clarity and Hotjar. Heatmaps and replays reveal the UX friction and rage-clicks that aggregate metrics hide.
How the Score Is Calculated
Each category passes when at least one tool in it is detected. The overall score is the weighted percentage of categories covered — so missing Web Analytics (30%) costs far more than missing Session Recording (10%). A score of 80+ means your measurement foundation is solid; below 60 means you are likely making marketing decisions without the data to back them up.
A Note on Detection Limits
The checker inspects the homepage HTML for each tool’s signature. Tools deployed via Google Tag Manager usually still expose detectable identifiers, but anything injected purely client-side after the page loads may not appear in the static markup. Connecting Google Search Console and Google Analytics in a full website audit also lets us confirm the connected state of those services in addition to on-page detection — for the most complete picture, run a full website audit.
